There’s been growing concern across Alberta about Bill 54, a piece of legislation passed by Premier Smith’s government that gives sweeping power over public lands.
Have to agree with Robin. There is a fringe element in conservative Alberta that has been far too cozy with Trump and the MAGA coup and who have virtually piggybacked on their horrid ideology and ham fisted strategies. It is plain to see what was really discussed in Smith’s Mar a Lago meeting before our election. Secession/annexation
was an obvious theme. If she wants to be an American lapdog to Trump she should apply for political asylum as a marginalized white Christian conservative (it seems to work) rather than committing acts of treason. She and her party’s attempts to diminish and disenfranchise our indigenous hosts are, sadly, nothing new. Alberta needs to dump her and her ilk ASAP.
That's the perfect solution. Move to the states if you & your cruelty crew are so eager to live under current Republican values. Take the minority of like minded Albertans with you. Treating fellow citizens a costs, denying them valued rights, putting all in equations where cruelty's always the denominator means you're not reflecting Canadian values. The equation you're pushing is rigged to always benefit the rich, while lying about what they're doing, & why.
Hypocrisy of the first order. Of course when you explain they'll never get universal healthcare again, interest drops off.
Danielle Smith does seem to have misunderstood her mandate. The demand she sent to Ottawa had one point worth noting, I believe it said respect indigenous rights. This is a pattern UCP has, tell Ottawa what to do, then she does the opposite on the provincial level. There is so much to unpack in Bill-54. Separation has taken the headline. Legal implications would be going on for years to come.
This is creating chaos and noise, meanwhile other serious issues like healthcare with Bill-55 and the corrupt care scandal is being lost in the news cycle.
If what is happening in America disturbs you, then start to take action here at home. Write to the ministers, to backbenches your MLA and also cc the opposition to keep a paper/email trail. UCP can’t be trusted.
I'm a proud Canadian living in rural NE Alberta. Unfortunately, I'm surrounded by people who are pushing the referendum to separate...this is oil country and they believe that we can survive on that alone??!! Not so. We NEED the other Provinces, just as they need us. We are stronger together.

Name one thing Mrs Moretta (Smith) has done that is a positive benefit to ALL ALBERTANS.
Said to be a good communicator she appears to listen but not hear anything that doesn’t advantage her.
This week alone she’s ignored the ongoing AHS chaos she set in motion, set up radicalized maple maga to have their voice heard, allowed coal mining in the Eastern Slopes, showed her arrogance in having her husband attend confidential government meetings. And on it goes.
Unlike Moretta I am a proud Albertan, proud of our inherent individuality, our inventiveness, our entrepreneurial bend and our ability to work towards solutions. You know, just like real business people do
Albertans are not the whining, self absorbed, non cooperative victims portrayed by Danielle Moretta.
Pack it up Mrs Moretta, head south to Panama where you will be welcomed as a canal guard by your maga overlords.
Thank you, Arlene, for so clearly and respectfully outlining the overreach and modelling how we can--and really should--address it. Let the Premier and your MLA (and heck, your MP too!) know about the lines that have been crossed. There's no sense in this Alberta isolationism, which ignores, as Arlene says, agreements, obligations, and responsibilities. Polls show that roughly 70 percent of Albertans don't want this -- let's make sure we speak up!
“She’s asserting control over land that doesn’t belong to her. That land is subject to Treaty rights which are legal agreements between the Crown and Indigenous Nations that are protected under the Constitution.”
They are definitely following the MAGA playbook. This is not a flavour of Alberta that I’m proud of. I want to act and want to speak out and I’m looking for ways to do that. Arlene, Please continue to speak loudly with an articulate and intelligent voice to bring reason to this chaos. We need your voice to help us all find ways to step up and take action.
Please email your Premier and your MPP as well as your Prime Minister and MP with your concerns. Simply state that you would prefer that your provincial Parliament operate in a fashion that respects agreements made in the past with indigenous people as well with agreements with the people of Alberta and of Canada.
One email is worth a thousand voices.
Send the same email everyday and, as long as everyone does it, the mighty Danielle Smith will get what she deserves.
Run out on a rail to her precious US of Assholes.
Encouraging your friends to do the same will really help.
Thank you for this, Arlene. I am a Western Canadian through and through. I grew up in Manitoba and lived in Alberta for 45 years. I raised my kids there. I now live in BC and I am appalled at what I hear coming out of my former home province, especially its current premier, who seems focussed only on her own interests. Voices of sanity like yours are what we need right now.
There is an assumption by the minuscule minority in Alberta that Alberta succession would be peaceful. News for them—no one is taking away my Canadian citizenship!
interesting that DS with KO visits tRump in Fla before all this...maybe she is taking a page( plagerizing!) directly from project25 and the maga-its...feeling emboldened, Dani?
Arlene, thank you for sharing. I live in Alberta and am deeply depressed about what is happening here re voter rights and our universal healthcare. I wish the Federal Government would take control of it vs the provinces. The provinces are abusing their powers. I never voted for UCP. I was transferred her from Quebec after the 1995 referendum with CP Rail. Thousands of us were dragged half way across the country far from family and friends. Quebec’s economy suffered terribly for over a decade and still does to this day because of its separatist rhetoric. Investors and corporations don’t like instability and chaos. Maybe Albertans who have listened to the constant lies and rage baiting will have a light bulb moment if and when companies leave. Unemployment rises. Housing market tanks as a mass exodus starts snowballing. Those of us from Quebec know that just the rhetoric kills the economy. The indigenous also informed Quebec the land was not theirs. Referendum was a resounding NO but the permanent damage to the province still occurred. Bills 54 and 55 are very disturbing on so many levels. I agree with you that Smith and her MLA’s are not operating with integrity. Smith behaves like she owns Alberta and we all work for her. Her MLA’s are weak as none of them speak up. They prove daily that the lot of them have no integrity. They need to be removed. Can we use the referendum process to stop them in their tracks re our rights to universal health care for one or a referendum to have an early election as they are unfit for office.

It smacks of Trumpism at its worst.

Bill 54 is wrong!

Arlene, you always got it right, from way back when you were on Dragons Dens, my favourite investor.
Here’s an idea… Use the new lower signature threshold to have a referendum to dump Yankee Doodle Dani! Where do I sign!
