My dad had a PhD in education. He believed we learn in our own ways and at our own pace. He was a pioneer in the concept of self-paced learning, did his thesis on the topic and became an entrepreneur later in life to help others learn. Saying he sought knowledge would be an understatement.
Dad believed that every moment in life, whether joyful or painful, was a teaching opportunity and a chance for his kids to learn. Some of my best lessons happened because he took the time to teach me the real meaning behind what I was experiencing. Not just from books, but from life.
He taught me to think for myself. To question what I read and heard and to observe what was around me. To seek truth, not others approval. Sometimes that meant I was on the outside of the majoritys thinking because I didn’t agree. I still am and often dont.
I don’t have a university degree. But that hasn’t stopped me from studying the world, reading widely or listening intently.
I love learning about business, people, and what builds a meaningful life. I thank my dad for that.
Canada is the most educated country in the world. And we should be very proud of that. It sets us apart and I think will be what makes us the leaders of the world that I know we can be. I believe deeply we are headed for greatness.
Education is also more than a formal diploma or degree. It’s about curiosity and ts about character.
And it’s about building a country where we use our minds ro think, question, and care.
Like all kids I did foolish things and after I did my dad would tell me to “use my brains”. He wasn’t being sarcastic he was trying to encourage me to think about what I had learned from my actions so I could do better next time. We can all benefit from that lesson in todays world.
Dad would encourage everyone today to be a lifelong learner and to stay curious. And he would encourage Canada and Canadians to “use our brains” so we can be all we can be. Even if that means standing apart.
Some people have been to university and aren’t educated. Others haven’t, and are.
I also believe Canada and Canadians are destined for greatness. I am elderly, and so unlikely to see the manifestation of this, but I see it developing, and have faith that my grandchildren will not only see this, but will participate in its achievement.
Thank you for your contribution to our greatness
