100%. Tell it to that bloviating, self-aggrantizing idiot Kevin O'Leary. So tired of his nonsense.

Brava, Arlene. Thank you for this post, which makes all the right points with the right tone. I am so tired of our own ‘tech bros’ and sell-out politicians and business people who don’t understand how the DST is in keeping with international trends, with policies in a number of other countries, and reflects long-standing Canadian policies to encourage, develop, protect, and support the production, distribution, and promotion of our cultural goods and services. Our tax system should reflects national interests.

Arlene, thank you for always being the voice of reason. In a time when some leaders rely on the 'bullshit baffles brains' strategy, your clear, logical explanations are more important than ever. We need truth and simplicity, not smoke and mirrors.

If you’re running a business in Canada, you pay taxes in Canada. End of story!

Yes, except too bad Harper allowed the American takeover of most of our print and digital media, Conservatives yet again.

As fair as it is. Would you forgo it to save auto and steel and aluminum jobs and the profits Canadian firms make from those sales. I think you need to see the final negotiated trade agreement to assess the reasonableness of this give. The country needs to buy some time in stable certainty to grow its alliances with tangible results to allow for an independent Canada not a subservient one. We have cards but not all the good ones. The good cards that we do have require nurturing, investment, certainty so sometimes you need to take a very small step back to develop better cards.

Agreed 👍… tbh this is more than the DST … this is a continuation of trumps 51st state rhetoric along with the large tech companies yelling in his ear … don’t forget many of these companies donated to trumps campaign … tariffs won’t go away while trump is in office … as he said many times “tariffs are my favourite word in the world”… he ignored the cusma contract … and continues to target Canada 🍁… perhaps some of the money from the DST can go towards assisting our lumber/steel/aluminium/automotive companies to further diversify our trade with willing partners ? I don’t know what the answer is, but do know that Canada cannot sit back any longer … we need to stand on our own two feet …

It's ironic that Trump throws a hissy fit over the DST when the United States is one of only two countries in the world (the other is Eritrea) that tax income based on citizenship rather than residency. In other words, if you're an American citizen, but work and live in Canada or any other country, you're expected to pay money to the IRS. Aside from Eritreans, expatriates from other countries that work and live in the US pay American taxes, but do not pay taxes at home.

Additionally, anyone who has ever won big in Vegas knows that the IRS also comes and takes a chunk of change from any foreign citizen who happens to win money on their soil. In Canada, if you win at a casino or a lottery, you pay no taxes - unless you happen to win in the US.

While the IRS scrapes pennies off the little people, American corporations expect to have a free ride in markets around the world that saves them billions of dollars and burdens the local economies. Their government supports this aim. Blatant hypocrisy, but what else is new?
